Commercial shuttle services began operating the route in the mid-1970s, shortly after Parks Canada designated Banff a year-round destination, and today the corridor carries over two million visitors annually into the heart of the Canadian Rockies.
Shared shuttle departures run between 05:00 and 22:30 daily, timed to align with major flight arrivals at Calgary's terminal. The journey climbs steadily from the prairie edge at 1,084 metres elevation to Banff's main avenue at 1,383 metres, passing through Canmore—once a coal-mining hub, now a staging post for climbers and trail runners—before entering Banff National Park's east gate. Adult passengers pay a mandatory 12.25 CAD conservation fee at entry, collected to fund trail maintenance, wildlife corridors, and avalanche control infrastructure across the park's 6,641 square kilometres.
The Bow Valley route threads between the Fairholme Range to the north and the Sundance Range to the south, with Cascade Mountain's 2,998-metre limestone face dominating the western skyline as shuttles approach the townsite. Morning departures between 06:00 and 10:00 avoid the midday surge of private vehicles and tour coaches that bottle the highway near Dead Man's Flat and the Canmore interchange. Shuttle operators hold commercial permits issued by Parks Canada, limiting the number of vehicles allowed on the corridor at any given hour to reduce congestion and emissions within the park's air quality monitoring zones.
